Directions

The Waltti card is scanned by the fare machine or remote reader whenever you get on a bus. The card must also be scanned on journeys where you have a transfer window. When you hear a beep, the ticket has been read and the card can be removed from the machine. The fare machine will display the following:

  •  the zones involved, the fare and the remaining balance where a value ticket has been used.
  •  for a season ticket, the last day it is valid
  •  transfers

If you want the information to remain on the display longer, keep the card in the machine longer.

Check out the instructions of a reader (in finnish),pdf.

Paying another person’s fare using money on a Waltti card

Using a multi-user value card

  • With value loaded on a card you can pay the fare for one or more people in the same or lower age class.
  • Any free transfers are recorded on the next bus with one scan.

Using a personal value card

  • With value loaded on a card you can pay the fare for one or more people in the same or lower age class when the cardholder is travelling with them.
  • Any free transfers are recorded on the next bus with one scan.

The fare charged is based on the customer type of the cardholder. For example, if an adult uses their own card to pay the fare for a young person/child/senior, the card is charged with the price of an adult value ticket.

Using a personal Waltti card with a valid season ticket and positive value balance

  • You pay your own journey with the valid season ticket.
  • The journey of another person in the same or lower age group is paid using the value balance on the card according to the zones being travelled.
  • Please tell the driver that you’re paying another person’s fare with money loaded on your card or by using the reader yourself:
    • Asking the driver
      •  The driver enters the relevant zones into the machine.
      • when you get the ok, scan the card in the fare machine. This way a charge will be made from the balance of your card corresponding to the zones you’re travelling
    • Using the reader
      • choose ”maksa poikkeusmatka” [pay for an exceptional journey]
      •  chose the zones being travelled in
      •  scan the card.
  • The card is always charged the price of a value ticket for the age group of the holder of the personal card.
  • If changing buses, scan the card once in the fare machine. This will record both the use of a valid season ticket and the transfer ticket for the journey paid for with the value balance of the card.

Using senior value card

  • you can also pay another person’s fare but the card will always be charged the value of an adult ticket because the benefits associated with the card are always personal.
  • When paying another person’s fare using a senior Waltti card, you have to scan your own journey first and the scan the other passenger’s journey separately.
o if both journeys are scanned at the same time, both the fare charged for both journeys will be the cost of an adult ticket.
  • Any free transfers will all be recorded in the next bus with one scan.

With a student’s value card

  • You can pay another person’s fare with your value balance.
  • When paying another person’s fare using a student’s Waltti card, you have to scan your own journey first and the scan the other passenger’s journey separately.
  • Any free transfers will all be recorded in the next bus with one scan.

With a school pupil’s Waltti card

  •  A school pupil’s Waltti card is personal
  • The card entitles the holder to two journeys with transfers daily between 6 am and 6 pm.
  • You can pay the fare for another person in the customer group using the pupil’s card is there is enough money on the card.
  • Any free transfers and valid season ticket are all recorded with one scan on the next bus.

Pay for several person using the same Waltti card

  • The head of the group gets on the bus.
  • They tell the driver the number of people belonging to the same age group and the zones being travelled in or the destination.
    • A Waltti card can only be used to pay the fares for people in the same or lower age group.
    • A card for children cannot be used to pay the fare for an adult. An adult has to have their own card to pay for their journey.
  • The driver enters the zones and size of the group into the fare machine.
  • While this is being done, the rest of the group may get on the bus to minimize the time it has to be stopped.
  • When the driver gives the ok, the card can be placed in the reader.
  • The reader will charge the entire fare for the whole group.

Notes on season ticket

  • If a season ticket is still valid, the system will use it up. You can load a new season ticket on your Waltti card for use when your current season ticket expires. The system will begin to use it when the previous season ticket has expired.
  • The fare machine always displays the last day of one season ticket. It does not add together two season tickets loaded on the same card.
  • The validity of a new season ticket begins the first time it is scanned. In other words, if the old season ticket has expired, the new one is not loaded until the next time the card is scanned in the fare machine. In other words, there may be days between season tickets that go “uncounted”.

Travelling using money on a Waltti card in another Waltti city

You can travel in another Waltti city using money on your Waltti card more economically than if you pay in cash.

  • Tell the driver you are using money on your card
  • Say where you are going.
  • The driver will enter the zones entitling you to travel in the in the city.
  • When they have done this, you can scan the card in the fare machine.
  • OR If the vehicle has a separate card reader at the front door, the money on the visitor’s Waltti card can be scanned using the ”maksa poikkeusmatka” [pay for an exceptional journey] function.
