Frequently asked questions
Here is a list of questions our customers most often ask, and the answers to them.
You can buy your first Waltti card at Hämeenlinna City Service Point at Kastelli Service Point or at the Waltti online store.
At Hämeenlinna City Service Point you can buy both personal and multi-user cards but the online store sells only personal cards.
The online service uses banking credentials for identification. It will take about 1 week for you to get your card if you buy it at the online store.
If you lose your Waltti card, you can buy a new one to replace it. The card costs 5 euros and a case for the card 2 euros. You can buy a new card at the Hämeenlinna City Service Point (Kastelli) and there any products on the old card can be transferred to the new one.
If you want to cancel a lost Waltti card and prevent its being misused, you can do so by calling the city guidance and advice service point (Kastelli)When the card has been cancelled, it can no longer be used. You can then come to Kastelli later and we will transfer any products that were on the old card to you new one.
You can ask at Kastelli if a lost card has been turned in. If your card is found and brought to Kastelli, we will call or text the holder.
A new Waltti card costs 5 euros. Travel using the card is about 30% cheaper than paying in cash when you get on the bus. The sum loaded on the card does not expire, so you can use the amount until it runs out and add more value when you want.
Payment using a Waltti card is also faster than buying a single ticket in cash, so using a card speeds up everyone’s trip.
A Waltti card can be used for travelling on buses operated by Hämeenlinna regional transport in zones A, B and C. You can use the card on city and regional services. The routes are numbered 1 to 899. The Waltti card cannot be used on express buses. An exception are the express services of Pekolan Liikenne Oy, where a Waltti card is accepted but you may have to pay an express surcharge. In the journey planner, these express services are numbered from 900 up.
The money loaded onto a Waltti card for the Hämeenlinna region can be used in any Waltti city. Likewise money loaded onto your card can be used in Hämeenlinna.
A season ticket gives you unlimited travel for as long as the ticket is valid. This can be 30, 90 or 180 days and a season ticket can be bought for particular zones.
A value ticket is one loaded with a certain sum of money (0.65-500 euros), which decreases whenever you use the ticket. The money on the card does not expire. The maximum sum allowed on a card is 500 euros.
You may buy a season ticket and a value ticket using the same Waltti card. For example, you can buy a 30-day season ticket for zone A and, in addition, load 20 euros value onto the card in case you travel outside zone A.
You can use a value ticket to pay for a friend’s trip, the fare for which will be the price of an adult ticket. To get the senior discount on a bus trip you need a personal Waltti card. We recommend that everyone aged 70 or over should get a Waltti card.
Single, value and season tickets are divided into two groups: children and adults. A child is anyone between the ages of 7 and 16; an adult is anyone 17 and over. Value tickets also have a category for seniors. Anyone 70 or older is entitled to a senior discount. A senior may be asked to show proof of age when buying a ticket.
Children 6 years or under travel for free when accompanied by a paying traveller. Children between the ages of 7 and 16 pay the ordinary children’s fare. Children under the age of 7 who are travelling alone also the ordinary children’s fare.
Yes. You can buy your next season ticket before you need to use it. Your card can have both a valid and pending season ticket on it at the same time. The new ticket that has been loaded will be activated the first time you use it after the previous one has expired. In other words, if you don’t use the new season ticket its validity does not begin on the day right after the previous one expires. The ticket can be loaded well ahead of time without losing days of travel when the period changes.
A trip cannot be paid in parts. If the travel card also has money on it, this must be used for the whole trip from zone A to zone B. In such a case, please enter zone AB into the reader on the bus. The machine will then charge the appropriate fare. If the travel card does not have enough money on it, you will have to pay the entire trip from zone A to zone B in cash.
You may travel that way! From Turenki you can travel on a ticket for zone B to the stop Alikartano L and similarly from Hämeenlinna using a ticket for zone A to the stop Alikartano I. If you are travelling farther, you’ll have to buy a two-zone ticket. The same principle applies to the stop Tuiskula P. You can travel from Hämeenlinna using a ticket for zone A and to the stop Tuiskula E from Parola using a ticket for zone B.
There are two ways you visit the Waltti store. You can load the Waltti card directly using the number on the back of your card or you can set up a customer account at the store, for which you need your banking credentials. Please note that the KELA school journey subsidy is a personal discount and requires you to create a customer account at the online store using the student’s own banking credentials.
When buying a season ticket the customer has to choose the correct ticket type and the zones they want from the options presented. The authorities have right to verify the ticket type and put the card on a cancellation list [suspend] if the customer has bought a cheaper ticket that they were entitled to.
Yes. You can pay your fare using the contactless payment feature of your debit card. You can only pay one person’s fare this way. The fare charged is always the price of an adult ticket and the transfer window is always 90 minutes regardless of the number of zones.
Yes. You can buy single tickets on a bus in cash. We recommend having exact change if possible. Drivers will accept bills no larger than 20 euros but may accept larger one if they have change.
Yes. The transfer window also applies to a return journey. Depending on the zones, the transfer window doesn’t cost anything with single or value tickets. The return trip is scanned using the Waltti card as usual. If the right to transfer buses is still valid, the transfer is registered on the card automatically. If the transfer window has been exceeded, a new fare will be charged from the card. The transfer window for a trip in a single zone is 80 minutes, in two zones 90 minutes and in three zones 100 minutes. There is no transfer window when using a season ticket because passes allow unlimited travel for as long as the season ticket is valid.
When waiting for a bus at a stop, you have to show the driver a stop signal. This means raising your hand long enough that the driver puts on the righthand directional signal, which means they have seen you. When it is dark outside, it is easier for the driver to see you is you use the reflective case on the card case or hold up a phone with the screen lit up. Many different bus lines often go by the same stop, so drivers do not automatically stop if no one signals that they are waiting to get on.
Inside the bus, press the Stop button when you want to get off at the next stop.
If a bus does not come to a stop at the expected time and the customer calls a taxi, as a rule it is the customer who is responsible for the cost of the taxi. Requests for compensation are assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine if the city or bus company has any obligation to compensate the customer.
Frequently asked questions about contactless payment
The system calculates the cheapest fare for a customer depending on the journey involved. When you take the bus a certain number of times in the course of a day, you are charged the price of a day ticket, a certain number of days the price of a weekly ticket and so forth. At first, only single tickets can be bought using contactless payment. To take advantage of the price cap and make it possible to calculate it, you have to pay using one and the same card.
No, it is not possible. You can only pay your own fare using contactless payment. The system does not allow paying another person’s fare with the same card.
If you have shown your card to the machine before choosing the zones, the machine shows a message saying ”Poista kortti lukijasta ja valitse vyöhykkeet” [Please remove the card from the reader and choose the zones]. Continue, following the directions that appear on the reader.
If the reader indicates that your card doesn’t work, there may be several reasons why.
Examples:
- Your payment card does not support contactless payment.
- The machine could not read the card for some reason. Show the card to the reader again.
- The payment card has expired.
- There is not enough money on your card.
- For some reason it was not possible to charge the fare for your previous journey.
- The security limits (cash withdrawal limit) of your card have been reached. You can change the limits through your online bank.
- Your bank has imposed a condition that the PIN code has to be entered whenever you pay with the card.
The card will not work and you have to pay for the journey using some other means of payment. If for some reason the fare cannot be charged from your account, the card will be put on hold until the charge has been paid. After this payment is made, your card will function normally again.
The reader does not print out tickets. The charges paid and journeys made can be checked after you travel at the customer portal, which you log onto using the information on your card.
The portal shows the trips you’ve made and the fares charged for them and also allows you to print out a receipt. Journeys paid for using Google Pay and Apple Pay cannot at present be checked through the portal. Where a customer cannot view items in the customer portal but needs a receipt for trips taken with public transport, they can contact customer service for Hämeenlinna regional public transport.
