Ticket products
The broad range of tickets available will offer you a suitable alternative whether you are a regular or just occasional traveller.
A ”value ticket” means money that has been loaded onto a Waltti travel card. You can load any sum between 0.65 and – 500 euros. When the ticket is used, the fare for the number of zones travelled is deducted from the balance on the card.
A value ticket may be either personal or multi-user card.
• A multi-user card can be used by another person and money is refunded if the card is lost or improperly loaded.
• A personal card can be placed on a list of cancelled cards if lost or misused and the products loaded on the card will be credited on the new one.
Season ticket is a personal product that can be loaded on a Waltti card or a personal season ticket that can be bought on the Waltti mobile app.
• The validity can be 30, 90 or 180 days.
• The validity of a student´s season ticket is limited to 30 days.
• Season ticket may be bought only or zones A, AB, BC and ABC.

Single personal ticket bought from the driver.
• Payment is accepted in cash. (For payment using a debit card, see directions in the following section)

Changing buses is free during the window marked on the ticket. You have to get on the bus before the ticket expires.
Students entitled to free education receive subsidized school journeys on terms different to those for other students. Kela pays school journey subsidies to students who have applied for and been granted them. For additional information look Kela´s website.
A Waltti travel card is the main ticket for school journeys in the Hämeenlinna regional public transport area and in transport between Hämeenlinna and Lahti. The ticket products available through Matkahuolto should be used only when it is not possible to travel in both directions between home and school on buses that accept Waltti.
The Waltti card can be used for a 30-day subsidized season ticket or a half-month ticket. This allows the holder to travel on 14 days out of 30. These days need not be consecutive.
Please contact Kela or the school you go to if you have any questions about how you can get there or compensation.
1. You have to apply to Kela for the subsidy for one school year at a time.
2. The primary and fastest way to apply is to fill out an application in OmaKela, which is a customer service for private individuals. Log on to OmaKela using your bank credentials or mobile ID and fill out your application online.
3. An alternative is to fill out the paper form and print it: Application School transport subsidy KM 1 (pdf). Then send it on to Kela for its decision.
4. When you have received a decision approving your subsidy, you can load the subsidized ticket onto your Waltti card. You can load the ticket onto your card by yourself in the Waltti online store using your bank credentials. An alternative is to visit Hämeenlinna City Service Point at Service Point Kastelli. (Please note that a Kela-subsidized ticket cannot be loaded onto the Waltti mobile app on a phone).
5. If you already have a personal Waltti card for Hämeenlinna regional public transport, the subsidized ticket can be loaded onto the card. If you don’t have a Waltti card, you can go buy one at Kastelli or order one from the Waltti online store. The card will be posted to you at your home.
1. Register as a user using your banking credentials. Add the personal Waltti travel card to your account. A student must have their own personal Waltti account as well as a personal Waltti card.
2. If you log on to the online store yourself as a student, the first time you also have to use your banking credentials and indicate your course of study (opintopolku) in order to see the subsidized ticket product.
3. Purchase the product at the online store (even if the price is 0 euros, you still have to “buy” it and load it onto the Waltti card).
4. A subsidized school journey ticket is valid for 30 days at a time. Buy the next ticket when the current one is ending (it can be bought when over half of the current ticket has been used).
5. The last pass in the spring can be loaded 14 days before Kela’s subsidy expires. After this it is no longer possible to load a subsidized ticket onto a Waltti card.
o For example, if the subsidy has been granted through 5 June, the pass for May has to be loaded by 23 May.

Secondary school, comprehensive school and day-care groups may travel for free on Hämeenlinna public transport in certain cases.
Fill out a Liiku! form before you go in which you provide information on the trip.
Free travel requires that the trip meets the following conditions:
• It takes place outside of rush hour.
• The trip has to start on services leaving after 9 am and finishing before 2 pm.
• The maximum size of a group on any one bus is 30 children.
• The public transport authority does not guarantee that the entire group will fit on the same vehicle.
• The teacher or other adult accompanying the group has to pay for their journey as an adult normally would, for example, with a Waltti card. Alternatively, the number of adults can be marked on the electronic form, in which case the adults’ fares will by charged afterwards from the Board of Education and Welfare or ARX (Open Cultural Centre).
• The public transport authority in Hämeenlinna does not arrange charter service and thus will not order additional vehicles so that groups can travel to transport services.
• Free travel for groups does not apply on market-based transport.
The information on stops required on the form can be found in the journey planner: Reittioppaasta.
Contactless payment in buses is possible with the most common debit cards.
Contactless payment is always individual. You can’t pay another person’s fare, because the fare system always determines the cheapest fare for the traveller. Note: You can pay another person’s fare by some other means, such as cash, mobile ticket or Waltti card.
When using contactless payment, the fare charged will always be the value of an adult ticket.
The transfer window is always 90 minutes regardless of the zones.
Please check the charge, the status of the charge and print out the receipt, if necessary, using the customer portal asiakasportaalista. Note: An authorization hold on your account statement is not evidence of a charge.
Contactless payment is an easy means of paying for travel on the bus without the system asking you to enter your PIN code. Contactless payment is particularly suitable for those who only take the bus occasionally. In the future the payment cap will be extended to apply to single and day tickets and further to weekend tickets. When it is extended, contactless payment will become a solid option for daily travellers as well.
All you have to know is what zone your destination is in. The fare machine is automatically in the right departure zone.
You do not have to know your upcoming trips, how many trips you will make and what zones you’ll be travelling in; nor do you need to know how many times you’ll be taking the bus in a particular period. The system always calculates the cheapest alternative for you and that’s all you pay.
You can use contactless payment to pay a single individual fare, which costs the same an adult ticket. If you make several trips in the space of 90 minutes, you will only be charged for one. The system calculates the cheapest ticket for you automatically based on the trips you take.
If you make several trips in the course of the day and pay for each of them with contactless payment, the reader will recognize your card and add the fares together, getting closer to the price ceiling. When the fares you have paid during the day reach the ceiling, you can travel for free the rest of the day.
Pay for all the trips you take in the bus on the same day with the same card using contactless payment. Even if your card has been added to Google Pay, for example, it won’t conflict with the card. It will just start recalculating a payment ceiling.
1. Press the ”lähimaksu” button on the reader.
2. Check the zones. The assumption is the zone you’re in and that the same zone will be where your journey will end. If necessary, choose the appropriate zones vyöhykkeet.
3. Place your payment card in the lefthand slot on the reader. The reader will not ask for your PIN code. If the payment is successful, the machine will give a signal and the you’ll see “OK” on the screen.
4. The screen will not show the fare at all because this is calculated by the system in the background. Check the sum that has been charged and print out (or send by email) the receipt from the customer portal asiakasportaalista.
o Log onto the portal using your banking credentials. Please note that the system uses the card’s debit number. If you have a combination credit/debit card, you have to log on using the number on the back of the card.
The cards accepted in the buses are Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard and Eurocard. Contactless payment is also possible using the mobile apps Google Pay and Apple Pay if you have entered your card information into them. With contactless payment you do not receive a receipt or a ticket on the bus. It is possible to print out a receipt through the customer portal asiakasportaalista.
Diners Club and American Express are not accepted in contactless payment.
Contactless payment is not accepted on routes 868 or 900-902.
Verifying charges and getting a receipt
You may check your payment online through the customer portal asiakasportaalista using the number of your payment card. No user ID or password is needed. The portal allows you to print out a receipt.
Note that the system uses the card’s debit number. If you have a combination credit/debit card, you have to log on using the number on the back of the card.

Tickets for Hämeenlinna regional public transport may be bought as mobile tickets. The free mobile app Waltti may be downloaded from the Google Play and App Store apps. Also note that an adult mobile ticket is cheaper that one bought on the bus in cash.
The tickets sold in the Waltti app for Hämeenlinna regional public transport are:
• children’s single ticket, day ticket and 30-day pass
• adult single ticket, day ticket and 30-day pass
• student 30-day pass
Tickets are accepted in the buses and zones chosen in the app. Mobile tickets work only on a phone – they are not loaded onto your card. When you buy a mobile ticket, you cannot cancel the purchase or change the zones. For example, if a customer has bought a mobile ticket for zones A and B by accident, the choice of zones cannot be changed later.
Validity and use of a mobile ticket
The validity of a mobile ticket begins immediately after it is bought and depends on the zones chosen as follows:
• 1 zone = 80 minutes
• 2 zones = 90 minutes
• 3 zones = 100 minutes
• 4 zones = 110 minutes
• 5-7 zones = 120 minutes
The ticket displays a running clock which shows how long it is still valid. It also has a changing QR code.
The ticket’s QR code is shown to the reader when getting on the bus, or a ticket inspector can check the ticket on the phone’s display. Please note that if the phone’s clock is wrong, the app is closed or the phone has no network connection, it will not be possible to show a valid ticket.
A mobile ticket allows unlimited travel for the period of its validity and in the zones chosen when it was bought. You can also change buses while the ticket is valid. When the ticket expires, you can travel to your destination in the zone chosen but a transfer is no longer allowed.
Paying for a mobile ticket
You can pay for a mobile ticket in the app using a card payment, a MobilePay payment or a mobile payment. It is a good idea to register in the application because if you should change phones, for example, your pass can be transferred to the new one.
Receipts for mobile ticket purchases can be seen in Waltti mobile and users who have registered can also see the receipts in the Waltti online store.

Some comprehensive school students have been granted free travel by bus to and from school by their municipalities. An application for the right to free school journeys can sent to one’s home municipality. Here are the links to the relevant pages dealing with school journey and transport:
• Hämeenlinna
• Hattula
• Janakkala

Waltti travel cards for new school pupils
Schools give out Waltti cards on the first day of school to pupils who have been granted the right to free school journeys
If you want to apply for the right to free school journeys for you child after the school year has begun, please contact the person who plans school transport for your home municipality. When the application for school journeys has been approved, Kastelli will go ahead and make a pupil card and send it to the pupil’s home address.
Using the card
The travel card is personal and it may only be used during the school year on school days between 6 am and 6 pm. The card allows pupils to make two journeys with transfers during the day between their home and school. A school card will not work on buses at other times. Pupils must then pay for their journey themselves. It is possible to load money on a pupil’s card to pay for journeys made during their free time.
When a comprehensive school pupil’s right to school journeys ends, it is still possible to use the Waltti card they have received if their customer group is updated at Kastelli.
If a card is lost or broken, a new one can be bought at Kastelli. It costs 5 euros. A lost card is cancelled and the products on it are transferred to the new card.
In Hämeenlinna regional public transport seniors 70 or over are entitled to travel at a discounted fare using a Waltti value card Monday to Friday between 9 am and 2 pm. If travelling outside these times using a travel card, seniors pay the adult fare.
The discount applies on all services in all buses operated by Hämeenlinna regional public transport in which the Waltti card can be used for paying, the exception being market-based services.
The senior ticket works and the discount is given only on journeys paid for using a personal Waltti travel. The customer group marked on the card must be senior, which means that when you turn 70, you should take your Waltti card to Kastelli to have your status changed from adult to senior. This will allow you to take advantage of the senior discount.
No discount is possible on a multi-user card, pass, mobile ticket or single ticket purchased on the bus.
Getting a new Waltti card and updating your customer status are easy at Kastelli and at limited customer service points rajoitetuissa asiakaspalvelupisteissä. A Waltti card can be loaded a sales points and the Waltti online store Waltin verkkokaupassa.
When creating a new card, an entry is made on it of the default travel zones that you travel in for the most part. When you travel on regional public transport in Hämeenlinna outside of the default zones, please mention this to the driver before the card is scanned in the fare machine.
A senior ticket includes the right to change buses. Within the transfer window you can freely change buses within the zones you have paid for. For more information on the right to transfer, see Lippuhinnat -sivulta.
You can also use the senior Waltti card to pay the fare of person travelling with you but the fare charged from the card will always be an adult fare, as the senior discount is a personal benefit.
Waltti is a national travel card that functions as a pass and value ticket. A value ticket can be used to pay individual trips and a pass allows unlimited travel for as long as the pass is valid.
Both ticket products can be loaded onto the card and the value on the card or the pass can be used depending on the passenger’s needs.
In Waltti the price of a ticket is based on the number of zones vyöhykkeisiin travelled in and the customer type.
A new Waltti card can be bought at the following locations::
• Kastelli Hämeenlinnan kaupunkineuvonnasta Palvelupiste Kastellista
• limited customer service points at certain R-kiosks R-kioskien rajoitetuista asiakaspalvelupisteistä
• the Waltti online store Waltti- kaupasta
When you buy a Waltti card, default travel zones are encoded on it representing the zones you travel in for the most part. When you travel in the default zones, you do not have to scan your card in the fare machine or the reader.
There are two ways to go about paying for a journey outside the default zones.
A customer can choose ”maksa poikkeusmatka” on the reader and then choose the zones being travelled in. If you place the card in the reader after this, the fare for travelling in the chosen zones is charged.
Alternatively, before scanning the card you can mention to the driver that you are paying for an exceptional journey. The driver will enter the exceptional zones into the fare machine, after which the card will be scanned. The fare for travelling in the exceptional zones will then be charged to the card.
If you are in a different Waltti city, the default zones will not work due to the difference in zones and fares. When in another city, you should scan the card in the driver’s fare machine. A Waltti card from a different city will not work in the reader. Let the driver in the other Waltti city know where you are going before the card is scanned. The driver will enter the zones to be travelled in in the fare machine and when they give you the ok, scan your Waltti card.
Value loaded on a Waltti card can be used in all the Waltti cities in Finland. The HML regional pass can only be loaded on the Hämeenlinna region’s own Waltti card.
